FMP - Week 5 - Part 3

Revelations! Note to self, you can always learn new things, and push yourself so that you're more likely to.

I know that it might seem like a no brainer, but when this is around the 5th character that I've ever textured in substance, I think I'm getting into the groove of the texturing process, or at least thats what I thought.

Whilst my texturing techniqure is good for the most part and very non-destructive, using masks and fill layers to allow for editing at every step of the way, my tutor showed me some tricks and tips this week that completely blew my knowledge of character texturing out of the water.

When approaching my work, my tutor took a seat and asked "so how much of this is hand painted and how much is generated", and with a tone of confusion I just replied... all of it? After realising this, he then taught me how to generate depth and colour on my model beyond handpainting capabilities by using my ambiet occlusion, curvature and position maps (to name a few) as a solid base before I go in and begin hand painting details.

You can see the difference this makes in the images below on the character's gun holster:

This has changed the entire way I approach texturing and has definitely imroved the outcome, I'm excited!
