FMP - Week 8 - Part 4

Tutor feedback - good news and bad news all round.

I think we've all experienced times where we've entered a situation expecting one thing and getting something completely different in reality. Well that was today. I got some tutor feedback on my Overwatch character and my progress with my Seaclops so far and it was interesting to say the least.

Overall I think they didn't mind my overwatch character but when it came to my Cyclops character, oh boy. There are many things wrong with it and apparently they pretty much all stem from my concept image and that is what has led me astray.

As you can see above, one of many things that my tutors pointed out as wrong was the wrinkle-like shape around the character's stomach. I'd adapted it as a design choice but my tutor pointed it out that he believes it may actually be meant to be the ribcage (somehow). Moreover, they told me in the nicest way possible that my anatomy was completely off and that I was jumping into tertiary details before even mastering the shape of the character yet.

Lastly, they concluded my feedback session saying that it would be best if I completely revamped the character from the ground up by starting with a much stronger and anatomically correct base, so here goes try number 2!

FMP - Week 8 - Part 3

Getting art block and trying to conquer it in my own way, because we don't have the time for art block!

I'm a little stuck as to what else to do on my high poly sculpt so I've decided to move onto my low poly model for now. I've Zremeshed the body of my model and added in the low poly accessories that I originally made for the character before making them high poly in zbrush and this is what I've got so far:

My only qualm with zremesh is that it does some really interesting stuff with parts of the geometry that stick out, like the starfish shape on his stomach there, but I only ever use Zremesh as a jumping off point for my model and I'll fix it later down the line.

FMP - Week 8 - Part 2

High poly model sculpting - how much detail is too much detail?

I'm not sure what it is about this sculpt but I'm not feeling as confident about it as I did with my Overwatch character. It makes sense, I know Overwatch like the back of my hand and making a character to belong there felt like home, but I do feel a little out of my depth making this creature.

Moreover, I'm concerned that I'm adding too many little details but then that feeling just reminds me that you can polish dirt as much as you want but its still dirt. I'll be getting feedback at the end of this week so I'll ask about it then!

In the meantime, here is my progress:

I do really love the little boats on the back of his armour piece, and I like all of the lumps and bumps on his skin and the texture of the leather on his back. I feel like overall I'm getting better and making things look textured in zbrush.

FMP - Week 8 - Part 1

More sculpting, more decisions to make, and more artistic liberty.

So it seems that the longer I work with this concept the more I'm struggling with it, I remember being taught in one of our lectures that the concept image that you work from with a 3D character makes or breaks that character and now I'm a little concerned.

Nevertheless, we keep on keeping on, and I'm continuing to add more details to my cyclops model. I added some texture to his shoulder pads as I imagine that they are supposed to look like rocks covered in barnacles or types of coral. I also took some more artistic liberty by moving the startfish from the characters eye in the original concept and moving it to his belly, to still give the sea creature vibe without him looking like the superhero guy from Spongebob Squarepants, its a strange comparison but thats the only way I kept seeing it.

Below are the progress shots from Zbrush so far:

As you can see, I've started to add some fish scaley textures to his skin to add more interest, and after coming from my beautiful Overwatch character project, I'm having far too much fun making him look super ugly.

I am struggling to adapt the concept image here and there though, like the wrinkles in his skin on the abdomen, I adapted it to look the way his stomache does above.

FMP - Week 7 - Part 4

The beginning of the sculpting process and the decision to use a little artistic liberty.

Today marks the first day of the sculpt for my underwater beast... ocean monster... sea cyclops... Seaclops! He shall now be called Seaclops. Puns aside, after looking closer at my concept image and then at the reference images I have taken from existing God of War enemies to get a feel for the aesthetic I was going for, I realised that the cyclops was a little slimmer than I wanted him to be. So, I decided to use a little artistic liberty to make him fatter and stockier than he is shown in the concept, but otherwise keep the concept the same.

Here are some images of how I'm doing so far:

Here you can just see that I keep switching from modelling the body in Zbrush and moving him into 3ds Max to then add his accessories like the shoulder pads, waist band and cloth.

FMP - Week 7 - Part 3

FMP section two - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

My second project is to make a cyclops to exist as a villain in an action RPG similar to that of the God of War series of games. My research images are below and they are to help me get a feel for how the character is going to look as I model it.

Last but not least, below is the concept image that I will be working on for this project. I'm aware that the perspective is a little bit off, but I plan on using other images to reference my cyclops' anatomy, I will mainly be using this concept image as inspiration for the look of the cyclops.

Final presentation of Overwatch character: ArtStation link, beauty shots and moving on to project number two!

ArtStation - Overwatch Character FMP Project

Above is the link to my ArtStation presentation of my finished Overwatch character, and below are some of the beauty shots I've taken to show the detail and work behind the project.
